I started at UK & Ireland Life in 2010 as an Actuarial Student. When I joined I was fairly early on in my career, I only had a few exams under my belt so I knew I had many exams to pass and a lot of experience to gain before I could reach my goal of qualifying as an Actuary. |
Munich Re's extensive study package has given me exactly the support I need to quickly progress through the exams. As well as the financial support for study materials, I am given study leave, access to the actuarial student union and my own personal study mentor. Having contact with such a wide network of students and actuaries is particularly useful as they are able to give great advice on good study techniques. Now I'm well on my way to qualification!
In addition to advancing through my studies, I have also had exposure to a variety of work and products. My first role was in a department that was mainly involved in product development and the pricing of innovative new offerings to the market. This gave me free reign to develop complex ideas
and translate them into pricing models. The best part was that I got the opportunity to collaborate with other departments including Underwriting and Data Analytics. The work was challenging and so there were some steep learning curves but it really opened my eyes to the work of a reinsurer.
This year I moved to Business Analysis. This area focuses on monitoring existing and potential business to both maintain profitability and to support quotes. This has been a new challenge as I often have to work under pressure and within tight time frames to meet client expectations. I have thrived in this role and as a result I now have much more responsibility in managing my own projects, managing the work of others and increased client contact.
As Munich Re is an international company, my exposure has not been limited to the UK & Ireland Life market alone. This year I have visited Head Office in Munich for four weeks to learn about other markets such as Property, Casualty and Asset and Liability Management. This has truly given me an insight of Munich Re's global operation.
With the support I am given and the variety of work I am involved in I can see clear progression up the career ladder into becoming a well rounded Actuary. As a student actuary there isn't much more I could ask for.
